JC_LS795 Jefferson City, MO Fri May 24, 2013 MO Dept of Ag/USDA Market News Missouri Weekly Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report – Week Ending 5/24/13 Receipts: 27,228 Week Ago: 32,697 Year Ago: 26,119 Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold uneven with most sales trending steady to 5.00 lower and some instances, on less desirable calves, seeing declines of as much as 10.00. Buyers in North central and Northwest Missouri were on a completely different program this week as sales were unmistakably fully steady to 5.00 higher. Offerings there were mostly all high quality reputation cattle with strong health programs, including a good percentage of yearlings. The supply of feeders was moderate. Although the decline in numbers has happened at a much slower pace than expected, it seems as if we are finally transitioning towards the smaller summer runs that are more typical. Many producers are ready or have just begun haying and are eager to replenish supplies that were completely used up last fall and winter. The Choice boxed-beef cut-out continued the climb this past week and new record highs were obtained once again. Currently packers are enjoying seeing the black ink after operating in the red for a long time. Feedlot managers however, continue to see red as feed cost remain high and likely will as what is left of last year’s corn crop is considered tight. Even though grain producers made amazing progress with planting during the recent sunny dry spell, it will be months before those recently planted kernels can be turned in to livestock feed and of course the memories of last year’s growing season are far from forgotten. Memorial Day marks the official start to grilling season and although it’s typically more of a hamburger than steak event all eyes are watching to see just how much charcoal is burnt as many questions about the level of beef demand exist. Unfortunately the recent spike in fuel at the pumps will likely do nothing to help the beef counters move product in the local grocery stores either. Feedlot trade for the week has been limited as of this report but those sales were reported from 124.00-126.00 this week and a few dressed sales at 200.00-202.00.
