ML_GR311 Greeley, CO Fri May 17, 2013 USDA - CO Dept of Ag Market News California Hay Report Compared to last week: All classes of hay traded mostly steady to weaker in all regions this week. According to NOAA, light precipitation fell across California at the start of the week in varying amounts. Temperatures were below normal at the weeks start though they had risen to very warm levels Statewide by the weekend. Range and pasture conditions are reported to be in fair to poor condition. The week's light rains were too late in the season to benefit lower elevation range and raised concerns about degrading grass nutrient value. According to University of California extension agent Larry Godfrey, the cooler than average early spring temperatures in Kern County and the Imperial Valley have produced higher than normal aphid numbers. Consequently, yields are said to be decreased as much as 30 to 80 percent in some areas. Godfrey says hot summer conditions coupled with biological controls such as lady bugs should help alleviate the outbreak. Demand good for all classes of hay on light trade activity.
